LEAD Safe Renovators Training Program
Why the LEAD Safe Renovator Course is necessary:
State and Federal laws have been issued for renovation that applies to all homes and child-occupied facilities built before 1978. These laws require that contractors and staff (renovators) performing renovation, repair, and painting projects that disturb paint in these facilities be certified in the EPA Renovation, Repair, and Painting Rule (RRP) and follow specific work practices to reduce human exposure to lead.
In order to achieve certification, renovators must take an approved Iowa LEAD Safe Renovator Course (LSR) that will teach the specifics of the RRP Rule, as well as the lead safe work practices. HACAP is an Iowa approved training firm for this course and the follow-up LSR Refresher Course required every three years to maintain certification.
How HACAP can serve this need:
HACAP will provide two LSR course options in each county of our service delivery area (Linn, Johnson, Jones, Benton, Iowa, and Washington counties) in compliance with Iowa and Federal law:
Initial LEAD Safe Renovator Course – 8 hours
This course is required for anyone who has never attended a Lead Safe Work Practices training. This course will be taught in two sections; the first section in a classroom setting and the second section is a hands-on learning setting. The classroom setting will consist of the following modules:
- Module 1 – Introduction to Lead Based Paint and Lead Poisoning in Iowa
- Module 2 – Current Laws and Regulations
- Module 3 – Getting Started, Set-Up, and Safe Work Practices
- Module 4 – Clean Up Methods/Tools/Safe Work Practices
- Module 5 – On the Job Training
- Module 6 – Record Keeping
- Module 7 – Certification in Iowa
LEAD Safe Renovator Refresher Course – 4 hours
The Refresher course is required for certified LSR contractors and staff every three years in order to maintain certification. The refresher course will be offered to renovators that were previously certified under the past required Lead Safe Work Practices (LSWP) certification course. Documentation of past LSWP certification is required if renovators wish to take the refresher course in place of the initial course.
- The refresher course consists of modules 2-7 listed above, along with a 2-hour hands learning section.
Each course participant will be required to pass a written exam with a score of at least 80% and pass the hands-on skills assessment to be eligible to apply for your certification from the State of Iowa. Participants will have 3 opportunities to pass the exam before being required to retake the course.
How to become a State of Iowa Certified Lead-Safe Renovator:
After successful completion of the entire course and passage of the written exam and skills assessment, each participant will be required to submit an application for certification to the Iowa Department of Public Health, a copy of your certificate indicating successful course completion, and a fee of $60. Applications will be provided during the course, along with information for reimbursement of training costs and course fee provided by the Iowa Department of Economic Development (IDED). The reimbursement for training costs is funded by HUD and other State of Iowa programs.
