Program Spotlight on LIHEAP
Posted 12/20/2009

The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP, is a federally funded program that assists individuals and families in paying their heating vendor.  It is currently a very busy time for the LIHEAP team.  The application period began October 1, by accepting applications from clients 60 years old and above, and for individuals who are disabled.  Beginning November 1, all other individuals and families were eligible to apply.  The application period has been extended from April 15 to April 30.  As of December 18th, HACAP’s energy assistance program has received over 5000 applications, nearly 4500 of which have been approved.

What is LIHEAP, and how does this program assist HACAP clients?

Often referred to as “The Energy Assistance Program,” LIHEAP assists individuals and families on a low income pay their heating vendor (Alliant, MidAmerican, etc.).  The amount of monetary assistance – which is paid directly to the vendor in most cases – is determined in part by level of poverty, type of housing (house, apartment, mobile home), and fuel type (natural gas, electric, propane, or wood-burning).  LIHEAP can also assist with the purchase or repair of energy-efficient furnaces and water heaters.
