Program Spotlight on the Food Reservoir
What is the Food Reservoir, and how does this program assist HACAP clients?
As a member of the Feeding America food bank network, the Food Reservoir receives, stores, and distributes over 1,550,000 pounds of food and grocery products a year to over 100 eligible partner agencies in our service area.
The Food Reservoir:
- Matched 576 families with adopters this past Christmas
- Packed 1,810 food boxes for Holiday distribution
- Packs over 250 food boxes a month that are distributed at other HACAP sites in Washington, Jones, and Linn Counties
- Routinely distributes over 130,000 pounds of food and grocery products monthly
- Provides training in safe food handling to partner agencies
- Is currently accepting applications only from emergency programs (pantries, shelters, and soup kitchens)
- Is working to establish the BackPack program in Washington, Iowa
- Just installed a new freezer to enable us to handle increasing frozen donations
- Has been provided with over 24,000 pounds of ground venison so far this year from the HUSH Program

Where is the Food Reservoir Located?
The Food Reservoir is a part of HACAP’s Corporate Office at 1515 Hawkeye Drive in Hiawatha.
Who is eligible for this program?
Partner Agencies (able to receive food from the Food Reservoir) must be 501(c) 3 organizations that distribute food directly to those in need.
The BackPack Program is open to schools in our service area with a high percentage of free and reduced priced lunch recipients and must be willing to meet the program operational guidelines.
Adopt-a-Family is open to needy families referred to the Food Reservoir by cooperating organizations.
