Matt Downey, a Boy Scout from Troop 42 at St. Pius has built and donated three sandboxes for HACAP's Inn Circle location. "For my Eagle Scout project, I decided to build 3 sandboxes for the HACAP Head Start, Inn Circle Children's Center in Cedar Rapids. I came upon this project because my mom, Louise Downey is a dietitian with HACAP and some of the people she knew at Inn Circle had mentioned to her that they would like some sandboxes for the kids."
The cost of most materials for the wooden 4'x8' sandboxes were provided by HACAP. Materials for the sandbox lids were donated by volunteers. Matt was assisted by his father and several volunteers including local contractor Mike Micka, who has a son in Troop 42. Four tons of sand were donated and delivered by the employees at Martin Marietta, a local sand company. Employees at Martin Marietta also collected money for sandbox toys.
Matt is a Junior at Kennedy High School. After graduation he plans to attend college in Colorado as a Pharmacy major.
