The Cedar Rapids Kernels scored two victories August 31 at Veteran’s Stadium, one on the field over the Burlington Bees and another off the field over poverty on behalf of the Homeless Children’s Trust.
Before the game Kernel’s General Manager Jack Roeder, and Manager Ever Magallanes presented a check for $300 on behalf of the Homeless Children’s Trust. There were many worthy organizations to choose from and the Kernels chose homeless children. Magallanes related, “It’s a great charity, the guys in the clubhouse like it so we took up a collection.” Homeless Children’s Trust Chair Mary Fielder expressed appreciation for the donation, “This is such a great surprise and honor to be selected again by the Kernels for the donation from the team.” Jason Varney, Community Relations Coordinator for the Hawkeye Area Community Action Program, Inc. (HACAP) accepted the donation on behalf of the Children’s Trust. “I would like to thank the Kernels for their generosity and for bringing awareness to the plight of homeless children in our area – it’s all about helping the kids.”
The Homeless Children’s Trust, organized and run by volunteers, provides temporary assistance to homeless children in order to minimize the risks of educational and social failure associated with homelessness. No salaries or indirect expenses are taken from the donations. 100% of the fund is used to assist homeless children by providing funds for emergency childcare, healthcare, protective clothing and educational supplies or for coordinating the events. The Trust is entirely dependent upon community donations. For more information on the homeless Children’s Trust, call Mary Fielder at (319) 270-3583. Donations can be mailed to the Homeless Children’s Trust, P.O. Box 490, Hiawatha, IA 52233.
