A permanent housing location on Cherry Hill Drive NE in Cedar Rapids was recently the subject of HACAP’s revitalizing Landscaping Program. Landscape Maintenance Supervisor Greg Goodel designed and with the assistance of interns Jamin Nollsch and Kenny Bruner implemented a planting space encapsulating the front of and one side of the home. Tiger Eye Sumac and Birch Leaf Spirea were among the several varieties of plants added. The centerpiece of the project was a 7 year old Honey Locust tree which will provide much needed shade in the back yard. Greg stated that the work is not yet finished, “This is an ongoing project for the benefit of the family; we also plan to implement a space for a garden in the back yard.”
Resident Margaret Lockhart, who has lived in the home for nearly five years, and her 3 boys, Kyler 10, Nate 8, and Nick 7, joined in the project. “I really like plants, but would not have the resources to do this without HACAP…this also gives my boys a chance to participate and learn about gardening”.
Future landscaping projects are scheduled for the months ahead and will involve more housing units and HACAP resource centers.
