Eastern Iowa Freedom from Hunger Food Drive celebrating 15 years

Seeking more companies, individuals and organizations to participate as demand for food assistance rises

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (June 6, 2017) – The Eastern Iowa Freedom from Hunger Food and Fund Drive is celebrating its 15th anniversary this year.  As one of the largest food drives in Linn County, the Eastern Iowa Freedom from Hunger Food and Fund Drive is vitally important in addressing the needs of those who are food insecure in our community, especially during the summer months when food supplies dwindle.

As the need for food assistance continues to grow, Eastern Iowa Freedom from Hunger organizers are seeking companies willing to participate in this year’s food drive.  The drive takes place at area businesses and community events from June through August.

“There are 12.1% residents who are experiencing food insecurity in East Central Iowa. We are experiencing a continuous increase in need for food assistance throughout our community,” said Linda Gorkow, director of the HACAP Food Reservoir and co-chair of the Freedom from Hunger planning committee.

Gorkow noted that, “Summer time is typically when we see food assistance reserves decline, so it’s vitally important that this year’s Freedom from Hunger drive is a successful one.”

Last year, 50 area companies participated in the effort and collected enough food and cash donations to provide 124,061 meals to those who are hungry in our community.  That is a food and cash equivalent of approximately 148,874 pounds! The Linn County Board of Supervisors Witwer Trust, the Cedar Rapids Kernels, KCRG Show You Care Sponsors, HACAP Food Reservoir, the Linn County Continuum of Care Planning and Policy Council and area Veterans, are again teaming up to sponsor this year’s Freedom from Hunger food challenge.

Any individual, employer or organization interested in sponsoring or participating in this year’s food drive may contact one of the individuals listed for more information.

Over its history, The Eastern Iowa Freedom from Hunger Food Drive has engaged more than 250 unduplicated organizations and generated food and cash equivalent to more than 1.65 million pounds, enough to provide nearly 1.4 million meals to those who are hungry in our community.
