HACAP Receives Semi-Truck of Food through America 250 Initiative

October 22, 2026

Up to 40,000 pounds of food will help stock HACAP shelves as families continue to face rising grocery costs and increased need.

As the United States continues to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, HACAP has welcomed  a fully-loaded semi-truck carrying up to 40,000 pounds of food donated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Two other such truckloads were delivered earlier this year to Des Moines and Davenport.

The Church is using its established infrastructure, volunteer network, and humanitarian food resources to help bring America250 into neighborhoods like those in eastern Iowa, turning a national commemoration into local service. By the end of 2026, the Church will have donated at least 250 truckloads throughout all 50 states. The deliveries will provide millions of meals to families in need across the country as part of America250’s America Gives initiative.

HACAP is a community action agency that is by and for Iowans, helping our neighbors so they can do more than just get by; they get ahead. Thousands of neighbors across nine counties turn toward HACAP. The result is a stronger community for everyone. “As more families continue to turn to food assistance, donations like this are critical in helping us keep healthy food on our shelves and available to our neighbors when they need it most,” said Aron Brecht, Food Reservoir Director at HACAP. “We are incredibly grateful for this support, which will help us meet the growing need across the communities we serve and ensure fewer families have to worry about where their next meal will come from.”

Jacob Christenson, a local leader among Latter-day Saints, added, “We didn’t expect Iowa to receive a third America250 donation from the Church!  Being able to help our neighbors in the Cedar Rapids area this way reminds us how important it is to care for each other in meaningful ways. HACAP does that every day, and we are grateful to play a small role in their efforts.”

Katie Sorrell, Executive Director of the Iowa Food Bank Association, commented “In 2025, Iowa’s six food banks, including HACAP Food Reservoir, distributed 54 million meals across our state. Yet one in six Iowa children continues to face food insecurity. With food and gas prices remaining high and federal support decreasing, families and food banks alike are feeling the strain. We are deeply grateful for community partners like The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who stand alongside Iowa’s food banks as we work to ensure our neighbors have the food they need.”
