From Screen to Smiles: A Special Head Start Connection Comes Full Circle

For the children at Head Start, Maggie Leach was already a familiar friend long before they met her in person.

 

Maggie first began supporting Head Start while serving as Ms. Burlington, connecting with classrooms through virtual visits. Although the children had only interacted with her through Zoom, she quickly became a positive and encouraging presence in their lives.

 

Now serving as Ms. Iowa Volunteer, Maggie recently had the opportunity to visit the classroom face-to-face for the very first time, and it was a day filled with smiles, laughter, and special memories.

 

Maggie arrived with thoughtful gifts for the classroom, including books and items to support the children's calming corner. She spent time dancing with the children, answering their questions, and even stayed to participate in center time activities alongside them.

The excitement was evident as the children finally got to meet someone they had only known through a computer screen. To thank Maggie for her ongoing support and advocacy, the children presented her with a handmade canvas decorated with their handprints.

For Maggie, the gift was especially meaningful.

 

A passionate advocate for Head Start classrooms and the children they serve, she shared how much it meant to finally meet the students in person after building connections virtually. Beaming throughout the visit, Maggie said she would treasure the handprint canvas for years to come.

 

The day was a wonderful reminder of the impact that caring community members can have on young learners and how meaningful those connections become when support turns into friendship.
