The importance of giving back to your community can’t be understated. When you give back, you are directly bettering the lives of your friends, neighbors, colleagues, community and most importantly, your loved ones. Finding meaning by giving back to the community doesn’t just benefit others – it benefits you.
While many of us know the benefits of serving the community, sometimes the hardest part is knowing where to start. To help you and the community get through these challenging times, we've come up with some easy ideas to boost your community's spirits while keeping your safety and health in mind.
Check in with your neighbors
Even though you may not feel comfortable seeing each other face-to-face yet, staying connected to your neighbors is important. By simply making a quick phone call, writing a note, helping with yard work, dropping off a meal or having a conversation on the front porch you can help brighten the spirits of someone who may need it the most.
Volunteer at a local food pantry or community dining site
Volunteering is a rewarding and meaningful way to help our communities grow and thrive. If you're passionate about hunger relief then this is the perfect opportunity for you. Not only are you nourishing a community in need but you are creating meaningful connections in the process. From donating food to your local food pantry, packing meal packs for kids and seniors, or dishing up a delicious meal at a local dining sites, the opportunities to feed the hungry are plentiful.
Support your veterans
Our veterans are the heart of our community and they deserve our appreciation and support. With the temporary closure of many veterans centers due to Covid-19 many veterans are needing your support now more than ever. If you would like to show your support for your local veterans , there are many ways to make it happen. Sometimes the smallest gesture like a gas gift card, a housewarming gift, arrangement of transportation or a simple thank you can make a big impact. Remember no action is too small.
Donate to a meaningful cause
When you donate to a community action agency like HACAP, you help make the difference that oftentimes you are unable to provide with your own hands. HACAP strives to empower individuals by giving them a hand up, not a hand out. By using this theory we are creating a lasting change in the lives of individuals and families.
Listen. Learn. Advocate.
Sometimes the biggest way to give back is by being your community's biggest advocate. Listen and learn from the people around you and their needs, share resources and be an advocate for change! If you know of someone who needs help and support during these trying times, guide them to resources near them so they too can thrive.
Whether you decide to help by volunteering or supporting your local Veteran there are so many ways to give back to the community and, it’s up to each and every one of us to create the change we wish to see in this world. Always remember, together we rise. Who is ready to make a difference?
