7 ways to take action during Hunger Action Month

Each September, HACAP, in conjunction with Feeding America, marks National Hunger Action Month, when we, along with our partners in the fight against hunger, mobilize everyone everywhere to get involved in ending hunger in America.

Together, let’s raise awareness of the problem, help feed hungry neighbors, and work together as ONE to create long-term solutions.

"Hunger can affect community members from all walks of life. Due to the effects of the coronavirus pandemic, more than 42 million people may experience food insecurity, including a potential 13 million children."

Here’s how you can take action this month to help people in your community and beyond.

1. Rock the color Orange all month long

We get it - orange may not be everyone's favorite color but it certainly makes a statement and that is what we are here to do! This Hunger Month, join together by wearing orange and post a picture on social media using hashtag #hungeractionmonth #wearehacap.

2. Advocate, Advocate + Advocate some more

We can’t fight hunger without you! Advocacy efforts at HACAP revolve around informing, educating, engaging and empowering the community in the fight with hunger problems. Educate the people around you about hunger in Iowa and how they can help. Talk to those you know and help us reach out to the community for support!

Did you know some people believe that hunger isn’t an issue in America? But that simply isn’t true. Every county in the United States struggles with food insecurity. By sharing these five myths about hunger, you can help raise awareness of the problem and inspire your friends and family to take action. Read and share the Five Myths About Hunger on social media using #HungerActionMonth.

3. Volunteer with the coolest crew around

Spending a few hours each month volunteering can make an enormous difference for HACAP and the people we serve. Not to mention, its a feel good opportunity that is fun and boosts your morale! From sorting food, to packing boxes or childrens food packs to getting outdoors and distributing at our mobile food pantry - there are plenty of opportunities to give back. 4. Make hunger a topic of conversation with your children

It is never too early to get involved in the fight to end hunger in your community. Feeding America’s Family Action Plan has fun activities that will help you talk to your children about hunger and age-appropriate ways they can make a difference today and for years to come.

5. Make a change by donating today

Your donation to Feeding America or HACAP keeps hunger relief programs across the country running smoothly. While we love food donations, especially fresh from the garden veggies, we can do even more with monetary donations! Through monetary donations we have the opportunity to purchase even more local and culturally inclusive foods that support families from all walks of life. Consider making a one-time or monthly donation in honor of Hunger Action Month.

6. Thank a food bank hero

Right now, food bank staff and volunteers are on the front lines helping millions of families. They're working around the clock to keep food banks, pantries and meal programs running because they know that food on the table means so much more than just a meal — it is hope. Send a card, offer words of encouragement or simply say thank you.

7. Get social with us

Stay connected with us on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram as we share how Feeding America, HACAP and our community partners are fighting hunger every day!
