Eastern Iowa Freedom from Hunger Food Drive – time to get involved!

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (August 2018) – The Eastern Iowa Freedom from Hunger Food and Funds Drive is celebrating its 16th anniversary.  As one of the largest food drives in Linn County, the Eastern Iowa Freedom from Hunger Food Drive is vitally important in addressing the needs of those who are food insecure in our community, especially during the summer months when food supplies dwindle.

As the need for food assistance continues to grow, Eastern Iowa Freedom from Hunger organizers are seeking companies willing to participate in this year’s food and fund drive to help in the effort to feed hungry people in Eastern Iowa. The drive takes place at area businesses and community events throughout the summer. With the last month of summer we invite everyone to take part in this community-wide food drive now through August. Companies, group and organizations are invited to join the fight against hunger and join the Eastern Iowa Freedom From Hunger Food and Funds Drive.

Linda Gorkow, HACAP Food Reservoir director notes, “The food and monetary donations received from the Eastern Iowa Freedom from Hunger Food Drive make a positive impact in the lives of the 1 in 8 adults and 1 in 7 children who struggle to have enough food to eat in our service area. The funds donated allowed us to use our purchasing power to provide items that expanded our clients’ meal planning options, as well as purchase items with a higher nutritional content. Most of our clients are senior citizens and children, who rely on certain food items for proper health. We receive positive feedback from our partner agencies, noting how thankful they have been for the quality of donations received. The generous and collaborative spirit of our community is uplifting and very inspiring!!”

Last year, 55 area companies participated in the effort and collected enough food and cash donations to provide 175,240 meals to those who are hungry in our community.  That is a food and cash equivalent of approximately 210,288 pounds! The Linn County Board of Supervisors Witwer Trust, the Cedar Rapids Kernels, KCRG Show You Care Sponsors, HACAP Food Reservoir, the Linn County Continuum of Care Planning and Policy Council and area Veterans, are again teaming up to sponsor this year’s Freedom from Hunger food challenge.

Any individual, employer or organization interested in sponsoring or participating in this year’s food drive may contact one of the individuals listed for more information.

Over its history, The Eastern Iowa Freedom from Hunger Food Drive has engaged more than 275 unduplicated organizations and generated food and cash equivalent to more than 1.85 million pounds, enough to provide nearly 1.6 million meals to those who are hungry in our community.
